Understanding Writing Placement Codes in UAccess

What is a writing placement code?

A student’s writing placement code tells you which Foundations Writing course they have permission to register for (it’s the “requisite” for Foundations Writing courses). Often you will see multiple placement codes for a student; the most recent one is typically the valid one.

This guide contains information on the most common codes you’ll see in UAccess. I have not included some lesser-used codes which will only show up on rare occasions.

Where to look for a student’s placement

The Writing Program Placement team enters placements in the Test Results section of UAccess, so the best place to see accurate placement information is from the Admissions tab, under Test Results.

  • The Test ID for a writing placement is “UAENGL.”
  • The Test Component area will read “UAWP” (for an initial/first placement) and sometimes you will see “UACH” (indicating that a change has been made). You will rarely see “UACH” without an initial “UAWP.”
  • The Test Score is the placement itself.
    • The first part of the code corresponds to a Foundations Writing course
    • The second part of the code (the decimal) is used for internal purposes, indicating how a student got their placement
  • The Test Date and Date Loaded will almost always be the same -- these indicate when the placement was recorded. We are in the process of updating the course requisites to ensure that the most recent UAENGL score will be the valid one for course registration (this is currently not always the case).

Interpreting Placement Codes

Common course codes

Since the first part of the code corresponds directly with a Foundations Writing course, these are fairly straightforward:

  • 100 = ENGL 101A
  • 101 = ENGL 101
  • 107 = ENGL 107
  • 106 = ENGL 106
  • 108 = ENGL 108
  • 102 = ENGL 102
  • 109 = ENGL 109H

The decimal following the placement is mainly for internal purposes to help us keep track of how a student may have gotten their placement:

What it meansWhat it looks like in UAccess
.0Student did not complete the Foundations Writing Evaluation before their orientation and was assigned a temporary placement based on their high school GPA.

UAWP 100.0, 101.0, 109.0

Temporary placements are not entered for international students.

.1Student completed the Foundations Writing Evaluation (FWE/iFWE) and selected their course

UAWP 101.1, 100.1, 109.1, 107.1

OR

UACH 107.1, 106.1, 101.1 (this is only used with international students whose initial placement was UAWP 106.9, indicating that further review is needed)

.2Student consulted with a Placement Advisor (PA) and then selected their courseYou’ll typically first see a UAWP (101.1, 100.1, 109.1), then a UACH (100.2, 109.2, 101.2, 107.2)
.3Student selected the course without consulting a PA. Typically, after a student receives a temporary placement and then decides to change their course.

UAWP 100.0, 101.0, 109.0

Followed by

UACH 101.3, 100.3, 109.3, 107.3

.4Student has English exam creditUAWP or UACH 102.4, 109.4 (you will only see 102 or 109, since English exams can be awarded either ENGL 101 credit or Gen Ed credit)
.8Transfer student with Foundations Writing-equivalent credit in UAccessUAWP or UACH 101.8, 102.8 (occasionally you may see 107.8 or 108.8, indicating the student’s preference for a second language writing section).
.9Student has reported some incoming credit (exam or course) but transcripts/scores have not been verifiedUAWP or UACH 102.9

Common non-course codes

These are codes that don’t give permission to enroll in a course, but rather, communicate that the student has completed their Foundations Writing requirement with outside credit, a recognized general education certification (AGEC, IGETC, CSUGE), or a completed degree (BA, BS, MA, MS, etc.).

106.9Student has completed the iFWE but their responses require further evaluation from two placement advisors. Student should NOT be enrolled in ENGL 106. Final placement will be entered within 5-10 business days.UAWP 106.9
99.0Student has transfer credit covering the entire Foundations Writing requirement. Transcripts are posted in UAccess.UAWP or UACH 99.0
99.9Student has reported incoming 101 and 102 credit, but transcripts are not yet posted.UAWP or UACH 99.9
101.9Transfer student whose coursework needs review, or who may qualify for other FW options (Transfer Portfolio or ENGL 306T)UAWP or UACH 101.9

Second Language Placement Proficiency Equivalencies

ACQUIRING PROFICIENCY

The online placement exam is typically accessed via Next Steps Center and may only be used to determine the level of language coursework in which a student should begin at the UA. The online placement exam may not be used to satisfy the proficiency requirement in a student’s degree program.

The Proctored Language Proficiency Exam, available through the College of Humanities Instructional Computing unit will determine: a) a student’s level of proficiency in the language; and b) the level of language coursework in which a student may begin at the UA. Only the Proctored Language Proficiency Exam may be used to satisfy the proficiency requirement in a student’s degree program provided the result meets or exceeds the required level of proficiency. If a student has met their required level of second language proficiency via this exam, then this will automatically be noted on the student’s Advisement Report.

By taking the Online Second Language Placement Exam students received placement into one of our language courses at the University of Arizona. To graduate from the University students will need either a second, fourth, or sixth semester proficiency in a language depending on their degree program/major (BA/BFA/BS/BSBA). (Students can contact their major advisor for specifics about their degree requirements).

Proficiency can be obtained in one of the following ways:

  1. Take the language they tested into, starting with the course they placed into, up to their requirement level.
  2. Take any other language from first semester up to their requirement level.
  3. Take the Language Proficiency Exam on campus for proficiency.  To schedule the exam go to http://advising.humanities.arizona.edu/language-proficiency-exam
  4. Take the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) test to earn 4, 8, 12, or 16 units.

The Proctored Language Proficiency Exam is typically offered on a bi-weekly basis during the regular semesters. Students may schedule this exam at the following website:https://lppe.humanities.arizona.edu/

Proctored Proficiency exams for Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Korean are done once at the beginning of Fall and Spring Semesters:

Italianhttps://french.arizona.edu/undergraduate/placement-exams

Chinese/Japanese/Koreanhttps://eas.arizona.edu/information-placement-exam

Match the placement code (PR or PL) to the class that they placed into and should start with. The PL/PR denotes which exam was taken.
PL = Placement Exam
PR = Proctored Proficiency Exam
